Ganesh Chaturthi Pooja at Home: Things That Become Part of the Celebration

If Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in your home, you probably already know one thing, there’s no single way everyone prepares for it.
Some homes begin preparing days in advance while some celebrations are simple and quiet.
Some families have traditions and preparations that have been followed for generations, while others may be getting ready for Ganesh Chaturthi in their own way for the first time.
And that’s exactly what I find interesting about this festival.
Namaskar! I’m Sakha, your companion in Dharma.
When we think about Ganesh Chaturthi pooja at home, it’s easy to find long lists online telling us what we need. But from one family to another and from one region to another the celebration can look quite different.
So, I’m not here to give you a strict rulebook.
Instead, let’s look at some of the things that commonly become part of Ganesh Chaturthi preparations at home, the things we prepare, offer, light and keep ready for the celebration.
And while we do that, don’t forget something important:
Your home’s Ganesh Chaturthi may have its own traditions too.

Preparing the Pooja Space for Ganesh Chaturthi
Before many of the other preparations begin, a space in the home starts taking shape.
For some families, it’s a beautifully decorated corner prepared specially for Ganpati.
For others, it’s the familiar place where pooja is performed every day, now made ready for the festival.
A Ganesh murti may be brought home. Flowers and decorations begin appearing.
Garlands may be placed around the pooja space, and gradually, different things find their place.
There is no single way every home does this.
Some celebrations are grand and colourful while others are simple and intimate.
But whether the preparation is big or small, this is often where the feeling of Ganesh Chaturthi truly begins, the moment a familiar part of the home starts looking ready for the celebration.
As the pooja space comes together, some of the Ganesh Chaturthi pooja items commonly used during the celebration begin finding their place too.
Others may be things your own family has always kept ready.
The space may look different everywhere, but the feeling of preparing for Ganpati is something many of us recognise.
Flowers, Durva and Other Offerings for Ganesh Chaturthi
Once the preparations begin, there are also the things we bring as offerings.
Flowers, fruits, durva and coconut are among the things commonly associated with Ganesh Chaturthi pooja.
But if you look at how different families celebrate, you’ll notice that what is offered can vary too.
A family may have a particular flower they always bring.
Another may prepare certain fruits or offerings that have become part of their own tradition.
And honestly, I think that’s worth remembering.
When people search for Ganesh Chaturthi puja samagri, they’re often looking for one complete list that applies to everyone.
But family traditions can add their own meaning and practices to the celebration.
There are certainly things that are commonly used but your own family’s traditions may include something that no internet list knows about.
So, while preparing the offerings, it can be helpful to know the common things people keep ready.
But it’s equally worth asking at home:
“What do we traditionally offer during Ganesh Chaturthi?”
You might discover something that has been part of your family’s celebration for years.

Prasad and Food Prepared for the Celebration
And then, of course, comes something many of us immediately associate with Ganesh Chaturthi food and prasad.
Modak is perhaps the most familiar example. For many people, Ganesh Chaturthi and modak almost belong in the same thought.
But just like other parts of the celebration, what is prepared at home can differ.
Some families make different kinds of modak. Some prepare other sweets.
Others may have particular dishes or offerings that have become part of their family’s celebration over the years.
The kitchen, in its own way, becomes part of Ganesh Chaturthi too.
Someone is preparing something. Someone is checking whether everything is ready.
Someone is waiting to offer the prasad during pooja.
These are small moments but they’re often the moments we remember.
And that’s why I wouldn’t reduce prasad to just another item on a checklist.
Because in many homes, it is also part of the preparation, the effort and the time a family spends together during the celebration.

Dhoop, Agarbatti and Other Things That Become Part of Pooja
There are some things that may not receive much attention when we’re making a list but you immediately notice them when the pooja begins.
The light of a diya.
The fragrance of dhoop or agarbatti.
The familiar moment of aarti.
These things often become part of the atmosphere around pooja in Hindu homes.
Dhoop and Agarbatti
For many families, lighting dhoop sticks or agarbatti is a familiar part of pooja.
The fragrance slowly spreads through the pooja space and the home, becoming part of that particular moment of prayer.
Some families may prefer dhoop. Others may light agarbatti.
Sometimes, both may be part of the pooja.
You can also explore our guides on Best Dhoop Sticks for Pooja and Best Dhoop Cups for Pooja to understand more about the different options used during pooja.
Havan Cups
For families whose Ganesh Chaturthi traditions include havan, havan cups may also be part of the preparation.
Again, this is why one universal Ganesh Chaturthi checklist can never tell the complete story.
What is part of one family’s tradition may not necessarily be part of another’s.
Bhimseni Camphor
Camphor is another familiar part of pooja and aarti in many Hindu homes.
Along with light, fragrance and the rituals followed by a family, these small things can become part of the atmosphere around Ganesh Chaturthi.
They may seem simple.
But sometimes, it’s the simple things that make a moment feel familiar.

The Things No Ganesh Chaturthi Samagri List Can Tell You
Now, this might be my favourite part.
An online article can tell you about common things used during Ganesh Chaturthi pooja.
It can mention flowers, fruits, diya, durva, prasad, dhoop and many other things.
But there are some things no Ganesh Chaturthi samagri list can know about your home.
Maybe your family prepares a particular offering every year.
Maybe there is a flower someone always brings.
Maybe your grandparents followed a small tradition that your family continues today.
Maybe there is a particular prayer that everyone knows.
Or maybe there’s something that has been part of your Ganesh Chaturthi for so long that nobody remembers when it started.
Those things may never appear on an internet checklist.
But that doesn’t make them any less important.
In fact, those are often the things that make a celebration feel like your own.
So before you finish preparing, maybe ask someone at home:
“Is there anything we always keep ready for Ganpati?”
You may get an answer that no Google search could ever give you.
Ganesh Chaturthi Pooja Items: A Quick Reference
Of course, sometimes you simply want a quick reminder.
Maybe you’re helping with the preparations.
Maybe you’re celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi at home for the first time. Or perhaps you simply want to remember some of the common things kept ready for pooja.
Here is a simple Ganesh Chaturthi pooja items list to use as a reference:
- Ganesh murti or image used for worship
- Flowers and garlands
- Durva
- Fruits
- Coconut
- Prasad or sweets, including modak in many homes
- Akshata
- Kumkum
- Chandan or sandalwood paste
- Diya
- Dhoop sticks or agarbatti
- Camphor
- Other offerings and pooja items followed according to family tradition
This can be a helpful starting point if you’re looking for Ganesh Chaturthi puja samagri or trying to remember some of the common items used during the celebration.
Your family’s Ganesh Chaturthi puja samagri list may include additional things depending on your traditions and the way Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated at home.
Your Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration May Look Different
If you’ve reached the end of this article hoping to find one final answer to:
“What exactly do I need for Ganesh Chaturthi pooja?”
Well, Sakha has a slightly different answer.
There are certainly common things that become part of the celebration.
Knowing about them can be helpful, especially when you’re preparing or trying to remember what to keep ready.
But Ganesh Chaturthi pooja at home doesn’t have to look exactly the same everywhere.
Your family may celebrate differently.
Your traditions may include things that another family’s celebration doesn’t.
And that’s perfectly okay.
So use this article as a helpful reference.
Remember the common things that often become part of the celebration but before Ganpati arrives, take a moment to ask the people around you about the traditions of your own home.
Because somewhere between the flowers, the prasad, the diya, the fragrance of dhoop and the things your family has always kept ready you may find your own Ganesh Chaturthi story.
Ganpati Bappa Morya! 🙏
